Dear Henry Schein:
I am applying for the full time pediatric dentist position through your company.
I offer 17 years of private practice experience as well as 21 years of part time dental school teaching to both dental students and pediatric dental residents, 15 years of full time direct hospital patient care, and 40 years of treating patients in the OR. I was Chief of Pediatric Dentistry and Program Director of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency I created at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA and Division Chief and Program Director of the Pediatric Dental Residency I created at Nemours Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. My extensive experience in teaching as well as primary hospital dental care, coupled with a strong academic background and relevant certifications, has equipped me with the critical abilities to contribute to the pediatric dental patients in your area.
I am a national speaker in pediatric dentistry, where my topic is “Updates in Pediatric Dentistry: Treating Tiny Tots To Teens.” I provide up to date pediatric dental information that is evidence based and based on best practices and best outcomes. I hold faculty appointments in the Pediatric Dental Departments of Tufts Dental and Temple Dental. I am looking to focus my clinical skills and hospital experience in a position that will challenge me. I look DR Recruiting for this opportunity.
During my tenure at each organization, I gained valuable insight into dental health program coordination, individualized patient care, clinical processes, institutional operations, and patient needs. All these experiences, among many others, afforded me invaluable opportunities to develop and enhance my leadership and collaboration skills.
My areas of expertise are:
· Dental Trauma
· The Caries Process and Prevention
· Hospital and OR Dentistry
· Patients with Special Heal Care Needs (SHCN)
· The medically compromised dental patient
· Pulp therapy
· Restorative dentistry and dental materials
· Interceptive orthodontics
The hospital positions I held have given me the experience that would make me a strong candidate for this position. I successfully provided strong and effective leadership, guidance, and direction to team members while demonstrating efficient and innovative solutions to complex issues facing dental patient care. For example, at St. Mary’s as the first and only pediatric dentist in a city of 110,000 people which included 38,000 children, I interacted and was asked to consult and treat patients from other medical services and social services inside and outside the hospital. At Geisinger, I was Chief of Pediatric Dentistry in the Geisinger system of 46 hospital sites and Program Director of the Pediatric Dental Residency I created. I collaborated with the pediatric subspecialties, was an active member of the Cleft Palate team, presented Grand Rounds as well as Pediatric Grand Rounds, and presented learning sessions to the ED staff as to what constitutes a dental emergency and how to manage the common types of dental emergencies. I was then Division Chief of Pediatric Dentistry and Program Director of the Pediatric Dental Residency created at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children. As the first pediatric dentist in AI DuPont’s Hospital for Children78-year history in Wilmington, DE, I collaborated with many of the pediatric subspecialties and I treated the dental needs of many very sick children.
My goal has always been to ensure that each function and operational aspect was conducted in a highly professional manner and adhered to corporate standards, industry regulations, professional ethics, best practices, and the standard of care. For example, I am one of only 2 pediatric dentists, the other being my former Chairman of my Pediatric Dental Residency Program, to be awarded the Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD) from the Academy of General Dentistry. I had to present a series of cases over 6 years to the respective national and international experts in that field which accounted for the required 400 participation hours out of the 1400 needed for the MAGD. This often meant getting ‘outside my comfort zone’ by doing cases and procedures I had not done is several years.
I am a strong advocate for the Dental Home. While I was in rural PA at Geisinger Medical Center, I received the first grant from the AAPD’s Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children Fund. The grant was over $18,000. With only $1,000 of those funds I created a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation for new parents at birthing classes and handed out brochures of dental information which emphasized the dental home, nutritional counseling, and instruction on oral care for the infant and child. The goal was to reduce childhood caries in the area which would decrease the number of dental emergencies coming to the ED. As a result, I decreased the 27 month wait to 11 months for the average child patient that needed to be treated by me in the OR (the average patient age was 18-24 months old). However, I was still in the OR 11 days a month to keep up with demand because I covered an area of 380,000 children in central Pennsylvania.
I can make a positive contribution to the pediatric dental patients in your practice. I am available to meet with you to discuss my contributions at your convenience.
